Yesterday the first ever democraticly elected president of Russia died.
I caught a tribute to him on the news by some American spokesmen and i couldn't watch it it was so full of rubbish.
It said Yeltsin was a man commited to free speech and prosperity and an end to the Soviet Union.
By making such claims i came to the conclusion that he never actually bothered to look at Mr Yeltsins history or that of his Premiership.
Mr Yeltsin had one of the top jobs in the Soviet Union under Gorbachev. Were he remained until he publicly criticised the failures of Perestroika and how it was destroying the Soviet Union. He then demanded steps be taken to rebuild the Union to its former glory.
It wasn't until the last days of the Union that he joined the Russian nationalists which suggests that he saw the writing on the wall and like many republics who didn't really want independance(Belarus) decided to switch sides.
Also after he became Premier he instituted a number of "reforms" which led to the greatest economic crisis in Russian history after using a economic strategy suggested by the top US economists. The reforms advocated privatisation of everything, and industry collapsed completly.
Workers were paid in the goods they made which they would then have to try and sell somewhere else.
It also created another class dubbed the"oligharchs" they where the ones who used to run the blackmarket so i wouldn't say they were Mafia but the fact that they had underworld links was never questioned. Anyway they bought up all of the industry for a fraction of what it was actually worth. sometimes as little as 2.5%.
This people who basicly profitted from the collapse of there nation were and are so hated in Russia that when Putin had them arrested imprisoned and even executed many cheered and praise him.
And When the Deputies of the Duma(parliament) revolted in protest against these disatarous reforms Yeltsin proved his commitment to democracy by ruling by decree and having tanks and troops besiege and demolish the Duma with the Protesting deputies inside.
Then there was the First war with Chechnya. And his drink problem i think we know what happened there.
