I remember hearing something about a Nintendo Dolphin back in 1999 I think.(I was 7,I didn't know much about games) Was this just what Nintendo called the now to be known Gamecube or was it a whole new system entirely?

The "Dolphin" was simply a code name that was given to the Nintendo Gamecube while it was in the process of being Developed. Just like the Wii was Project Revolution and the Nintendo 64 was Project Reality.
That's why I find it humorus when people say they were suprized by the "name change" of the Nintendo Wii as if Nintendo said Revolution was the system's name from the start.

The code name "dolphin" sounds weird compared to "reality" and "revolution" it almost doesn't make sense. it's like "Which one of these is not like the other?" I wonder why they called it that, just seems odd to me.
