ok first off i didnt know where to put this because the last review thing i did was sonic chronicles and i couldnt put it there.
first off id like to say im a pretty fair sized fan of soul calibur. it was the first weapon based fighitng game and had a good story to tell, it also had a lot of varients like soul edge or soul blade, i even have the 2-d soul calibur spin off called soul blade which really is just a street fighter clone with guys with swords, everyone was there, seigfried, ivy, taki, cervantes and other classics like arthur and hwang.
The one i think we'll always remember is soul calibur 2, this again was fairly good. a simpler story, more characters and a text based adventure mode with stage effects but the big selling point was the exlcusive characters and i must admit i bought all the ports with this and played with the eye candy that is link, spawn and heihachi. now the feedback on using these three is that heihachi is just utter ass, just like he is in tekken (infact i think his moveset was just copy and pasted from tekken 3 or 4, which is why i wasnt any good with him cause i dont play as heihachi in tekken) spawn was ok, he was strong and surprisingly fast for his stature but link is where its at, as matt would know i was the shit with link as i trained with him and learnt every move and jesture, id even go as far as to say his moveset is the most comfoftable ive ever used in a fighting game, very responsive.
soul calibur 3 was the next in line but since it was only on the ps2 there wasnt any exclusive characters which kinda dissapointed me because i wanted to know who people would choose to represent them (im being a bit of a fanboy here but i think a final fantasy character wouldve been better then heihachi because tekken wasnt as successful as ff) but what we got instead was a major improvement, a character creation mode and an rts adventure mode with more story. i may say that a lot in here but thats what i want from a fighting game like this, interesting characters with a deep story to tell and a duty to fulfill. the character creation is self explanatory, you select your gender, your class (the class depends what weapons you can select but once you unlock sword master you can equip any weapon) put on some clothes and give yourself a voice and a name. now along with all the other characters movesets you get a fair selection of slightly new movesets, yea they may seem similar but they are unique in their own way
now onto the topic at hand, but a note to say first that i liked all the first 3 because it was cool to see such swordplay and chivalry and not just another fighter with stereotypical fighters and ridiculous special moves like a fireball or flying kick that takes 4 seconds to perform.
so what do i think of soul calibur 4? what do i "really" think of it? in short its total arse. really i have to come out with what i was thinking when i got it home and played it after a few months. well what do we have, straight off the bat we have new characters, 3 of them happen to be star wars characters as if we didnt know from their appearance, yoda and darth vader come to the fray but also a man simply known as the apprentice (actual name is galen marek) a shameless advertisement for the game force unleashed and the game actually has a trailer for you as well. theres a story mode which is reduced to a stupidly long text reel explaining the characters pathetic lives and motives and all the story does is put you against a bunch of characters and thats it, and since theres only 3 or 4 fighters everytime and a nicely new grab button all you need to do is spam grab everytime. we have the new fashion of live play, fighting noobs from across the world and i use that term because all they seem to do to get to the states they are in is spam the cuntish cheap moves over and over so thats not favorable. you also have a climb the tower mode of gameplay which just says "fight these guys under restrictions" thats it, even story mode had a purpose but fighting stupidly strong fighters for no reward is just jip. infact let me be breif the story mode is as boring as a long lost relative funeral, the internet play is just over populated with cheap cunt kids and the rest is just not even worth passing by to check what it is, the only place this game shines is the characrer creation and even that has flaws, you have less options of clothing to add on so a fully clad armor guy is out of the question. instead of choosing a fresh new moveset and actually feeling smug with yourself because the guy does look original you have to choose one of the other characters moves eliminating the custom in custom character and you cant choose any of the star wars guys moves, I WANTED TO MAKE A BEARDY LADY JEDI WITH MONOCLES AND NO SHOES. i should also point out that the game introduces finishing moves for the first time in SC but let me tell you pulling one of these off is like whacking off with the other hand, to do this you need to hit at your opponent until they do what is known as a "soul crush" then push all the attack buttons together (thankfully thats put to one of the shoulder buttons) and they are actually quite good moves to look at but so not worth it, or the achievement for doing 100 of them. would i reccomend it? not exactly, if its on for cheap and you want a new fighter to try out then go for it, seriously the only selling points of this game is the star wars cameos and the shiny new graphics tied in together with the ever growing popular boob engine, oh yea you can also destroy pieces of clothing, strategy wise it takes away abilities but we all why that was put in.
so soul calibur 4? a weak entry and a disappointing fighter even with 2 people who enjoy the thing. a low scoring 4 out of 10.
what do you think?
