Here's the story:
I was playing Rockband on my Wii and I got called away from the television. However, rather than shutting down the system, I just turned off the television set and my amplifier. My friend called shortly after and I walked over to his house. When I got back, I went to bed. I woke up in the morning and walked downstairs and tried playing some Guitar Hero. The Wii wouldn't read the disc and came of with an error message. I tried several other discs with no luck. I then did some research on the Nintendo Website and figured out i had to send it to the Nintendo factory to get it repaired for around $100 because my warranty was up. I copied all my save data to an SD card (with the exception of Guitar Hero, which stubbornly refused to copy), and sent it away. About a week later (Fast!) the Wii appeared at the front door with a note that said they replaced the disc drive and all the data stored on the Wii was recovered.
According to my parents and my sister (who were watching a movie at the time the Wii malfunctioned), the Wii was quiet, but all the sudden starting making extremely loud and rough noises. NTS; turn wii off when not in use
tl;dr: My wii disc drive malfunctioned and it cost $100 to get it fixed. Don't leave your wii on when not in use.

I've left mine on for hours accidentally. It's luckily, still fine. I've got an Xbox360 though. The Wii is most likely the least of my worries.
