Howdy there fellow WT's. This is my first issue in what I hope turns into a fairly decent blog series.
First game for discussion: Baten Kaitos.
Platform: Gamecube
This game is split down the middle. Some people love it, I mean cherish this game as an incredible experience. I am one of those people I must say. Others hate it mostly due to the card based battle system. The thing is with Baten Kaitos the enjoyment all depends on your preferance in games. It may sound weird but TRUE hardcore RPG fans will hate it. Because you dont mindlessly select attacks and wait to see if it hits or misses. If you're not into rpgs this is more for you because of the more tactical combat system. Seriously nothing is more satisfying than killing some beast by doing a 12 card combo and doing 99 hits completely pwning the enemy.
Though it is generally agreed on one thing. The visuals, cut scenes and in game are beautiful and the music score is amazing, rivaling and beating some of the zelda titles. And trust me I love zelda music.
Another great thing about the game is its pretty original. People evolve wings, islands in the skies an empire trying to raise a demon, well okay its half original but it seriously involves you.
The character developement is also fantastic, all the characters really come through and open up as the game goes on, especially the main hero Kalas, he's not some flat anime styled character thats oh-so-cool to the fangirls. He actually has an interesting back story too.
As for diffuclty. Its a pretty challenging rpg. Nice long-ass gameplay with extremely tactical battles and sidequests.
Cut down the middle only by the battle system, some people should lighten up and play it through for what its worth, a deep story, great heroes and brilliant cinematics and music. Its a must have for the cube and for gamers who like to think as they play. The sequals decent too!
