Sports games used to be about the fun, not the realism. Nowadays, developers seem to concern themselves more with licenses and whatnot over the general core of the game. As a result, we generally get very samey sports games churned out over and over again. But that wasn't always the case.
Discuss your favourite old school sports game!
Moi? Tecmo Super Bowl for NES. It was all about the fun. Yeah, sure it's got the licenses but who cares? The cry of 'hut hut hut' never fails to bring a jolly grin to me face, and a triumphant punch in the air as a perfect pass wins a touchdown. American football is seldom spoken of here in Blighty, but Tecmo Super Bowl did its best to bring across the pond.

International superstar soccer 64 was awesome, but mario power tennis on the gamecube tops all, I was undefeted with 38 vs matches won in a row. Majority against latimer.
